About the Data Engineering Team
Everybody has data, but the sheer volume of data at arenaflex can be boundless. In the Data Engineering team, we help arenaflex manage this data by building pipelines and data lakes to prepare big data for analysis and unlocking meaningful insights in real-time. We also leverage cross-departmental data and artificial intelligence to build a holistic view of true profitability, saving millions of dollars across item categories and geographies while helping our leadership make better decisions faster.
As a Senior Data Modeler at arenaflex, you will dive into our mammoth size of data to help unleash the power of retail data science by designing, creating, and maintaining data models that our Data Designers, Researchers, and Analysts can rely on. You will partner with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Stewards, other developers, and business stakeholders to solve complex and exciting modeling and analytical challenges so we can build capabilities that grow the retail business model while having a positive impact on our customers' lives.
What You'll Do
As a Senior Data Modeler in our Data Ventures division, you will play a critical role in shaping how arenaflex leverages its massive data assets. Your work will directly enable data-driven decision making across the entire organization, from executive leadership to store-level operations. Here's what you can expect in this role:
- Data Strategy Implementation: Work closely with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data streams, and develop scalable data models that meet enterprise-wide requirements.
- Data Model Development: Create intuitive and physical data models using industry best practices to ensure high data quality and support application, batch, and interactive use cases across the organization.
- Model Maintenance & Optimization: Create, improve, and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects according to company standards and architectural guidelines.
- Multi-Platform Modeling: Design data modeling solutions optimized for relational, hierarchical, and NoSQL databases including BigData, Hive, SQL Server, Hadoop, Cassandra, and cloud databases like BigQuery and Snowflake.
- Metadata Management: Maintain logical and physical data models along with corresponding metadata to ensure proper documentation and lineage tracking.
- Best Practices Development: Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models across all projects and teams.
- Model Reusability: Recommend opportunities for reuse of data models in new environments and applications to maximize return on modeling investment.
- Reverse Engineering: Perform reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts to understand existing data structures and relationships.
- Quality Assurance: Evaluate data models and physical databases for discrepancies and inconsistencies, working to resolve data integrity issues.
- Business Validation: Validate business data objects for accuracy and completeness in collaboration with business stakeholders.
- Integration Solutions: Analyze data-related system integration challenges and propose appropriate solutions that meet performance and scalability requirements.
- Technical Leadership: Guide System Analysts, Architects, Developers, and other team members on project constraints and capabilities, performance requirements, and interfaces.
- Code Review: Review modifications to existing programming to improve efficiency and performance across data pipelines and applications.
- Architecture Recommendations: Examine new application designs and recommend improvements when necessary to align with enterprise data architecture standards.
What You'll Bring
We're looking for a passionate data professional who thrives on solving complex problems and has the expertise to design data solutions that scale. The ideal candidate will have:
- Educational Background: Strong academic record with a bachelor's degree (B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech/MBA) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
- Extensive Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of hands-on data warehousing experience with proven track record of delivering enterprise-scale data solutions.
- Modeling Expertise: Solid knowledge of various data modeling techniques for data warehousing including 3NF, dimensional, hybrid, and data vault methodologies.
- Big Data Experience: Experience working on large-scale (100 TB+) data warehouses (DW) and operational data stores (ODS) that handle massive transaction volumes.
- Technology Proficiency: Extensive experience building data models for MPP, relational, and NoSQL technologies including BigData, Hive, SQL Server, Hadoop, Cassandra, and cloud databases such as BigQuery and Snowflake.
- Collaborative Skills: Great experience working with globally distributed teams in a collaborative and productive manner, with the ability to navigate time zone differences and cultural diversity.
- Communication Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication skills across a variety of stakeholders, with the ability to negotiate with and influence others to achieve positive outcomes.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical mindset with the ability to approach complex data challenges with creative and practical solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications will give you an edge in this role:
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Systems
- Relevant industry experience in retail, supply chain, e-commerce, healthcare, or financial services
- Certification in data modeling or data architecture (e.g., CDMP, TOGAF)
- Experience with cloud-native data platforms and modern data architectures
- Knowledge of machine learning workflows and how data models support AI/ML initiatives
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks and data stewardship practices
