Your expertise in battery testing and characterization will be essential in ensuring the success, reliability, and performance of our cutting-edge lithium-ion battery designs.

This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of space technology innovation, where your contributions will directly impact the viability and performance of satellite systems that will serve millions of people worldwide. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the organization, working alongside experts in electrical engineering, materials science, thermal management, and systems integration.

Key Responsibilities

As a Battery Cell Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a pivotal role in the development and qualification of battery cells for our satellite platforms. Your daily activities will include:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and establish advanced battery cell performance requirements for current and future satellite power systems

  • Designing and executing comprehensive test plans to evaluate, validate, and qualify new lithium-ion cells for space applications, ensuring they meet stringent reliability and performance standards

  • Developing analytical models using limited test data and generating actionable insights to inform design decisions

  • Operating and maintaining battery cyclers (including systems such as Arbin, Netware, and similar equipment) and configuring test parameters for various lithium-ion cell evaluations

  • Analyzing test data to extract meaningful information about lithium-ion cell behavior, performance degradation, and failure mechanisms, then communicating findings effectively to stakeholders across the organization

  • Maintaining comprehensive documentation of test procedures, results, and technical insights in accordance with aerospace industry standards

  • Ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines throughout all testing and handling procedures for lithium-ion batteries

  • Participating in design reviews and providing technical input for battery pack development and integration

  • Staying current with emerging battery technologies, testing methodologies, and industry best practices

Required Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A long-term postgraduate degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field

  • A minimum of 3+ years of hands-on experience in the development and testing of battery cells within an advanced technology or aerospace environment

  • Proven experience with battery cycler operation and test setup configuration

  • Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry, cell degradation mechanisms, and failure analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex datasets and translate findings into actionable recommendations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications would be highly valued:

  • Advanced degree (PhD) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline

  • Direct experience with various battery testing methodologies including OCV (Open Circuit Voltage), EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy), DCIR (Direct Current Internal Resistance), Hysteresis, dQ/dV analysis, HPPC (Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization), cycle life testing, and calendar life testing

  • Experience managing multiple battery cyclers (Arbin, Netware, etc.) and developing comprehensive test protocols

  • Proficiency in applying Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies for optimizing electrochemical performance evaluation

  • In-depth knowledge of lithium-ion battery materials, including cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and separators

  • Familiarity with electrochemistry principles and various cell characterization techniques

  • Understanding of lithium-ion battery cell and pack requirements (thermal, structural, mechanical, electrical, electrochemical) specifically for space or aerospace applications

  • Knowledge of space-grade lithium-ion battery testing standards and qualification processes

  • Strong programming skills in data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, or similar languages

  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as JMP or Minitab

  • Background in failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) for battery systems
