About the position
We are seeking a talented individual to join our Surplus Lines Tax team at Marsh. This role will be based in Austin, TX.
This is a hybrid role that has a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.
As a Surplus Lines Tax Manager, you will lead a team of Tax Advisors, overseeing day-to-day surplus lines tax operations and guiding the team through complex analytical tasks and projects. You will collaborate closely with client-facing and market-facing colleagues, as well as senior leadership, to ensure accurate surplus lines tax filings, regulatory compliance, and continuous process improvement across assigned jurisdictions.
- Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the Surplus Lines Tax team, providing ongoing mentoring, coaching, and performance evaluation to support professional development and high-quality output.
- Manage daily surplus lines tax operations, implementing processes and policies to optimize productivity, accuracy, and compliance across assigned jurisdictions.
- Collaborate with client-facing and market-facing colleagues to advise on escalations and complex surplus lines placements, ensuring compliance prior to binding, accurate invoicing, and timely documentation submission for surplus lines filings.
- Coordinate workflow among client-facing, market-facing, and surplus lines processing units to guarantee timely, accurate filings and effective issue resolution.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with regulators, serving as the primary point of contact for escalations, audits, inquiries, and questions related to insurance statutes and surplus lines regulations.
- Monitor pending and enacted changes to surplus lines regulations, communicate relevant updates to the team and stakeholders, and identify and escalate process improvement opportunities to streamline surplus lines business operations.
- Requirements
- Knowledge of surplus lines insurance, tax, and compliance requirements, with experience ensuring accurate filings and regulatory adherence.
- Minimum 5+ years of insurance experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role; surplus lines insurance experience highly desirable.
- Bachelors degree preferred, along with a Property and Casualty broker license, Surplus Lines License, or the ability to obtain required licenses within 60 days of hire.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly adapt to other applications and programs, with a client-focused mindset and strong relationship-building skills.
- Nice-to-haves
- Demonstrated experience managing surplus lines regulatory relationships, audits, escalations, and complex jurisdictional issues.
- Proven track record driving process improvement initiatives, mitigating fines and penalties, and partnering with Compliance on client-based and corporate projects.
- Experience operating as an effective consultant and advisor, including training, or presenting to stakeholders using tools such as PowerPoint.
