Position Overview: Lead Data Engineer
We're looking for a highly motivated and technically skilled Lead Data Engineer to join our Engagement and Retention Data Engineering team. In this role, you'll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable data solutions that power critical business insights and drive customer engagement across our digital platforms.
As a Lead Data Engineer at arenaflex, you'll work at the intersection of data architecture, engineering, and analytics. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Product Managers, Data Modelers, Data Scientists, and Business Analysts to deliver robust data solutions that support our organization's analytical needs. This is a senior-level position that offers significant leadership opportunities and the chance to make a substantial impact on our data infrastructure.
What You'll Do
As a Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for the following key activities:
- Design and Build Data Products: Contribute to the design and construction of our data products and data warehouses focused on Engagement and Retention Analysis and Data Science initiatives.
- Develop Data Solutions: Design and develop scalable data warehousing solutions, building ETL pipelines in big data environments that span cloud, on-premises, and hybrid infrastructures.
- Technology Implementation: Work with our tech stack including Hadoop, AWS, Snowflake, Spark, and Airflow, utilizing programming languages such as Python and Scala.
- Data Architecture: Help engineer data solutions and structures while defining data models for critical data warehouses and data marts.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Data Product Managers, Data Modelers, and Data Engineers to design, implement, and deliver successful data solutions that meet business requirements.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of your work and changes to support data quality and data governance initiatives.
- Performance Optimization: Ensure high operational efficiency and quality of your solutions to meet service level agreements (SLAs) and maintain commitment to our internal clients, including Data Science and Data Analysis teams.
- Agile Practices: Be an active member and advocate for agile/scrum practices to ensure health and process improvements for your team.
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Innovation: Identify opportunities to improve existing data pipelines and propose innovative solutions to enhance our data infrastructure.
Required Qualifications & Skills
To be successful in this role, you'll need the following qualifications and skills:
- Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
- SQL Expertise: Strong SQL skills with the ability to write complex queries to extract data and build performant datasets for analytics and reporting.
- Distributed Systems Experience: Hands-on experience with distributed systems such as Spark, Hadoop (HDFS, Hive, Presto, PySpark) to query and process large-scale data efficiently.
- Programming Proficiency: Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or Scala for data processing and pipeline development.
- Database Technology: Experience with at least one major MPP or cloud database technology such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery.
- Data Integration Tools: Strong experience with data integration toolsets (such as Airflow) and writing and maintaining data pipelines.
- Data Modeling: Strong expertise in data modeling techniques and data warehousing standard methodologies and practices.
- Agile Methodology: Familiarity with Scrum and Agile approaches, with experience participating in sprint-based development cycles.
- Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail and exceptional analytical and communication skills.
- Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications would be considered a significant advantage:
- Cloud Technologies: Hands-on experience with cloud technologies such as AWS (S3, EMR, EC2), Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Big Data Certification: Relevant certifications in big data technologies or cloud platforms.
- Media Industry Experience: Understanding of the media and entertainment industry, particularly streaming services or digital content platforms.
- Advanced Analytics: Experience supporting data science and machine learning initiatives.
- Real-time Processing: Knowledge of real-time data streaming technologies such as Kafka or Flink.
- Advanced Degrees: Master's degree or higher in a related technical field.
- Performance Tuning: Strong background in query optimization and performance tuning for large-scale data systems.
