About the Role
We are seeking a Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) to join our Data Platform team. In this role, you will be instrumental in advancing and growing our infrastructure as we pursue our ambitious goal of reaching 500 million people globally. You will work on complex, large-scale distributed systems that process massive amounts of data and enable our engineering teams to deliver seamless streaming experiences to millions of users simultaneously.
This is a part-time position offering 8 hours per week with competitive compensation of $26/hour, providing flexibility while you contribute to meaningful work. We welcome candidates from Alabama and throughout the United States to apply for this remote opportunity.
What You'll Do
As a Distributed Systems Engineer at arenaflex, you will tackle some of the most interesting and challenging problems in the industry—working with data at unprecedented scale, building features and performance improvements, and collaborating closely with open-source communities to shape the future of data infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Build Distributed Systems: Architect and develop robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure that can handle petabyte-scale data processing and deliver sub-millisecond latencies.
- Develop Microservices: Create and maintain RESTful web services that enable efficient data storage, consumption, and management across Netflix microservices architecture.
- Platform Engineering: Build high-impact systems, controls, and orchestration frameworks that power cutting-edge data and analytics platforms across the organization.
- Data Processing: Work with technologies like Spark, Flink, and Kafka to build real-time data processing pipelines that handle millions of events per second.
- Performance Optimization: Design and implement solutions that optimize query performance, reduce latency, and improve overall system efficiency.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers to drive initiatives that meet business objectives.
- Open Source Contribution: Engage with the open-source community, contribute to arenaflex OSS projects, and share knowledge through technical publications and conferences.
- Mentorship and Leadership: Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and foster a culture of excellence and continuous learning.

Database Access Platform
This team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that facilitates data abstractions to work at sub-millisecond latencies while allowing microservices to efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. You will hold significant responsibility for enabling microservices to meet their ever-growing and evolving data needs. We're passionate about distributed data systems technology and are active contributors to the open-source community.
Data Platform Infrastructure
This team serves as a platform for our internal data platforms. Our shared systems and tooling enable rapid advancement in providing state-of-the-art data and analytics systems to the rest of the organization without building custom platforms for each new system. We create high-impact infrastructure, controls, and orchestration systems calibrated for running data systems at scale. Many of our tools are written in Python, making this an excellent team if you enjoy working in multiple languages.
Data Ingestion and Processing
Offers a self-service streaming-first pathway product to enable varied client personas to meet their low-latency data ingestion and processing requirements. This team enables reflection across complex streaming structures like Kafka and Flink, offers a pattern-driven processing experience, and invests in operational automation, reliability, and tools for predictable data quality.
Big Data Compute
Responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing. This team is critical to batch data processing in the Data Platform. It offers support for Spark, to ETL data into the petabyte-scale data warehouse and access that data using Spark and Presto/TrinoDB. It also provides sub-second latency for a specific class of queries using Druid. We are looking for outstanding talent with experience in Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems overall.
Big Data Orchestration
Offers the platform for designing, scheduling, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include foundational services that have all ETL and ML jobs running on Big Data Systems. These fully distributed systems are constantly evolving at arenaflex scale with cutting-edge technology. We are moving towards event-driven and intelligent orchestration that requires minimal user input.
What We're Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
- 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems, services, or applications
- Proficiency in designing and developing RESTful web services
- Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems
- Strong proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages
- Comfort with multi-threading and concurrent programming challenges
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Flink, Kafka, or similar frameworks
- Knowledge of cloud-native architectures and distributed databases
- Familiarity with query engines like Presto, Trino, or Druid
- Experience with data orchestration tools and workflows
- Understanding of data pipeline architecture and ETL processes
- Contributions to open-source projects
- Experience working with microservices architectures at scale
