Clarkson University is seeking a talented Windows Systems Administrator to join their IT team. This role involves monitoring, maintaining, and growing the technical infrastructure that supports the daily operations of the university, with a focus on Windows Server and cloud services administration.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments across physical and virtual infrastructure
  • Manage OS lifecycles including patching, upgrades, decommissioning, and capacity planning
  • Maintain server hardening standards and security baselines
  • Design, implement, and maintain Active Directory services including domain structure and health monitoring
  • Manage complex Group Policy Objects (GPO) — creation, testing, scoping, and troubleshooting
  • Administer role-based access controls, privileged access management, and account lifecycle processes
  • Administer the Microsoft 365 tenant; manage service configurations, compliance policies, licensing, and tenant security settings
  • Administer Google Workspace; manage organizational units, user provisioning, sharing permissions, and service-level policies via the Admin console
  • Manage application integrations, third-party app access, and API permissions within both platforms
  • Audit, evaluate, and deploy services across both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace according to University needs
  • Operate and maintain patch management systems (WSUS)
  • Develop and maintain patch schedules, reporting, and exception processes
  • Monitor endpoint compliance and drive remediation across the server fleet
  • Write and maintain PowerShell scripts for administration, automation, and reporting
  • Identify repetitive manual processes and build durable, documented automation in their place
  • Maintain and tune system monitoring; respond to and resolve alerts
  • Participate in root cause analysis following incidents and contribute to post-incident documentation
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation shared across the team
  • Recommend and help develop policies and procedures related to Windows infrastructure and M365 services
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation for systems, configurations, and processes
  • Collaborate across IT and with university departments to deliver solutions and resolve escalations
  • Identify and independently develop projects that benefit the department or the broader university community

Skills

  • Completion of secondary education (high school) or equivalent
  • Solid working knowledge of Windows Server administration (2016/2019/2022)
  • Hands-on experience with Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration
  • Functional PowerShell scripting ability — writing scripts, not just modifying them
  • Understanding of DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP fundamentals
  • Familiarity with virtualization concepts (Proxmox, VMware or equivalent)
  • Experience with patch management tools and processes
  • Understanding of backup and recovery concepts and tools
  • Ability to manage your own workload, prioritize effectively, and follow through without close supervision
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts — you work through the problem methodically and document what you find
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
  • Genuine interest in knowledge sharing and team-oriented work
  • Commitment to inclusive, respectful service across a diverse university community
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems or similar concentration
  • Experience with SCCM endpoint management
  • Knowledge of databases and database management
  • Experience with monitoring platforms (Nagios, Zabbix, or similar)
  • Familiarity with Linux server environments
  • Experience in higher education or other large, heterogeneous enterprise environments
