Within arenaflex, the Notifications Development Group is responsible for building and optimizing the communication systems that keep our users engaged, informed, and delighted. This team owns the critical infrastructure that delivers billions of notifications annually—including emails, push notifications, SMS messages, and in-product communications. The work we do directly impacts user engagement, subscription retention, and hundreds of millions of dollars in annual incremental revenue for arenaflex.

As a Full Stack Developer on this team, you'll be working at the intersection of backend engineering, frontend development, and customer experience. You'll have the opportunity to build features that users see and interact with daily, experiment with new communication strategies through A/B testing, and collaborate with talented colleagues across product management, design, data science, and engineering.

What You'll Do

Your day-to-day responsibilities will span both frontend and backend development, giving you a well-rounded experience that will accelerate your growth as a software engineer. Here's what you can expect:

• Build and enhance notification experiences: You'll develop features across multiple communication channels including email, push notifications, SMS, and in-product messaging. This includes creating responsive, visually appealing email templates using our in-house email frameworks.
• Drive product improvements through experimentation: You'll design and implement A/B tests to evaluate different notification strategies, messaging approaches, and user experience variations. You'll analyze results and use data to inform product decisions that improve engagement and retention.
• Own end-to-end features: From concept to deployment, you'll own the complete lifecycle of features. This means working with product managers to define requirements, collaborating with designers on user experiences, writing code, and monitoring performance in production.
• Work with backend systems: You'll integrate with core enrollment services including billing, payments, and account management. You'll also work with infrastructure, personalization engines, and content management systems to create seamless user experiences.
• Collaborate across teams: You'll be an integral part of a cross-functional team that includes product managers, designers, data scientists, and engineers from Android, iOS, web, and TV platforms. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential.
• Write clean, maintainable code: You'll develop reusable, templated systems and APIs that can be leveraged across multiple products and teams. You'll follow best practices for code quality, testing, and documentation.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Experience with customer-facing applications: You should have some familiarity with building applications that users interact with directly. Course projects, personal projects, or internship experiences all count.
• Understanding of experimentation: You should be familiar with concepts like A/B testing and statistical analysis, even if you haven't conducted experiments in a professional setting.
• Programming fundamentals: You should be comfortable with Java or another object-oriented programming language. You should understand core concepts like data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
• Web development experience: You should have experience with frontend web technologies including HTML, CSS, and at least one modern JavaScript framework. Familiarity with preprocessors like Sass or LESS is a plus.
• Database and query languages: You should be able to write SQL queries and have familiarity with big data platforms. Experience with SparkSQL, Hive, or similar tools is beneficial.
• API design knowledge: You should understand RESTful API principles and be able to design intuitive, extensible interfaces.
• JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency: Comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript for both frontend and backend development is essential.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Full stack development experience: Experience building both frontend and backend systems, with the ability to create complete, end-to-end solutions.
• Product development background: Experience working in agile product development teams, understanding the full product lifecycle.
• Multi-channel communication experience: Familiarity with building notification streams across push, SMS, messaging applications, and in-product experiences.
• Internationalization expertise: Experience with localization systems and ICU formatting for global applications.
• Email development skills: Experience creating responsive, interactive HTML emails and AMP email experiences.
• Scalable systems experience: Experience building large-scale, highly available gRPC services or similar distributed systems.
• Open source contributions: Contributions to open source projects, hackathon projects, or technical blog posts are all valued.
