The successful candidate will be based at our Waukee data center facility, serving as the primary EHS resource for the site. Position Overview
This full-time, on-site position sits with the arenaflex site leadership team and functions as the Waukee data center's primary resource for comprehensive EHS services. The EHS Lead will work closely with arenaflex leadership, vendor partners, and cross-functional teams to oversee site operations, maintenance activities, and construction projects.
In addition to core site responsibilities, this role may remotely support data center operations outside of the Waukee region and participate in broader cross-functional EHS program development and implementation initiatives. The EHS Lead drives consistency and process improvements across construction safety, physical security, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance areas.
Key Responsibilities
As an EHS Lead at arenaflex, you will be responsible for a comprehensive range of duties that include but are not limited to:
- Training & Development Collaboration: Work collaboratively with local and broader site teams, corporate EHS training teams, and the data center training team to ensure training programs are developed and deployed in accordance with regulations and mission needs.
- Risk Assessment & Work Permits: Conduct thorough job risk analyses, identify appropriate controls, and approve work permits to ensure all activities are performed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Contractor Oversight: Oversee on-site contractors, ensuring they adhere to arenaflex safety standards, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations throughout their engagement.
- Incident Investigation & Corrective Action: Lead or participate in incident investigations, develop effective corrective actions, and drive actions to closure while implementing preventive measures for the future.
- Audits & Assessments: Participate in EHS audits and tests, identifying areas for improvement and verifying compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
- Chemical Management: Support chemical and hazardous materials management programs, ensuring proper handling, storage, labeling, and disposal in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with record-keeping and reporting requirements for air, water, and waste permits, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
- Industrial Hygiene: Conduct industrial hygiene assessments to monitor workplace conditions and implement controls that protect employee health.
- Program Development: Support corporate EHS initiatives aimed at improving management systems, standards development, and technology implementations across the organization.
Essential Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of comprehensive EHS experience, with particular emphasis on construction, contractor management, and data center maintenance and operations activities.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of facilities management, engineering, construction, environmental control, and physical safety protocols including:
- Works at height
- Energy isolation procedures
- Medium voltage operations
- Confined space entry
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
- Fire/life safety systems
- Industrial hygiene principles
- Exceptional organizational, project management, data analytics, and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex situations and develop effective solutions.
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication abilities with the capacity to influence stakeholders without direct authority.
- Ability to learn and utilize software solutions for data management, online document collaboration, and virtual conferencing platforms.
- Capacity to work independently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to respond rapidly with clear and accurate input to a range of stakeholders in various situations.
- Highly collaborative nature with a team-first mindset, committed to supporting colleagues across departments and locations.
- Solid knowledge of relevant consensus standards and federal, state, and local requirements governing environmental health and safety.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications will give candidates a competitive edge:
- BA or BS degree in a relevant EHS discipline (Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Safety Engineering, or related field).
- Relevant technical certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist).
- Experience supporting after-hours emergency response activities.
- Prior experience in data center or critical facilities environments.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
