The Role: Data Engineer (L5)
Data Engineering at arenaflex is a dynamic and critical function that requires building robust systems to process data efficiently while modeling the data to drive meaningful analysis. Our data solutions span a wide spectrum, from team-level data pipelines that refresh business metrics in real-time to sophisticated stream processing services that integrate seamlessly with our core product features. As a Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will be expected to possess a rich understanding of the large distributed systems on which our data solutions are built.
This position requires candidates to demonstrate expertise across multiple skill areas, with depth in at least one particular domain. As a Data Engineer, you will also need strong communication skills since you will be working closely with business stakeholders, engineering teams, and data scientists to foster a culture of learning and data-driven decision-making throughout the organization.
Location and Work Arrangement
We are currently considering candidates who are willing to relocate to Los Gatos, California, as well as fully remote applicants who reside in the US with occasional visits to Los Gatos, depending on which team your skills align with most closely. Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a talented Data Engineer who embodies our culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. The ideal candidate will be someone who:
- Thrives on writing elegant, efficient code and feels comfortable independently learning and mastering new technologies as they emerge
- Is proficient in at least one major programming language such as Java, Scala, or Python, and is comfortable working with SQL for data manipulation and querying
- Enjoys helping teams push the boundaries of analytical insights, creating new product features using data, and fueling machine learning models that enhance our platform
- Has strong expertise in at least one of the following areas: distributed data processing, programming of data services, or data modeling
- Is familiar with big data technologies such as Spark or Flink and comfortable working with web-scale datasets that contain millions to billions of records
- Has an eye for detail, possesses strong data intuition, and demonstrates a genuine passion for data quality and accuracy
- Appreciates the importance of thorough documentation and possesses excellent debugging skills to troubleshoot complex data issues
- Embodies the arenaflex culture – someone who loves working independently while also collaborating effectively and giving and receiving honest, constructive feedback

Key Responsibilities
As a Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers our entire organization. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Designing and implementing scalable data pipelines that efficiently process large volumes of data from multiple sources
- Building and maintaining distributed data processing systems using technologies like Spark and Flink
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including product managers, data scientists, and business analysts to understand data requirements and deliver appropriate solutions
- Modeling data in ways that make it accessible and useful for analytics and machine learning applications
- Ensuring data quality, reliability, and consistency across all data systems and pipelines
- Optimizing data workflows for performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation for data systems and processes
- Mentoring junior team members and contributing to knowledge sharing across the organization
- Staying current with emerging technologies and evaluating new tools that could benefit our data infrastructure
- Participating in on-call rotation to ensure reliable operation of critical data systems
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in data engineering or a similar role
- Strong proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, Scala, or Python
- Solid understanding of SQL and database design principles
- Experience with distributed data processing frameworks (Spark, Flink, Hadoop, etc.)
- Knowledge of cloud platforms and services (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Understanding of data modeling concepts and best practices
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with real-time streaming data processing
- Knowledge of machine learning workflows and how data engineering supports ML initiatives
- Familiarity with data orchestration tools like Airflow, Luigi, or similar
- Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes
- Understanding of data governance and security best practices
- Experience in the entertainment, streaming, or media industry
- Advanced degree in a related technical field

Compensation and Benefits
At arenaflex, we believe in compensating employees fairly and transparently. Our compensation structure consists entirely of an annual salary – we do not offer bonuses. Instead, you select each year how much of your pay you want in cash versus stock options, giving you control over your compensation mix.
