Job Description:

The Oregon Department statewide Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is made up of youth from across the state who are passionate about leadership and using their voice to shape policy and programs to positively impact the lives of Oregon’s students.

Eligibility

  • Youth ages 14-18

  • Youth and students from EVERY school type and educational environment is encouraged to apply

  • Our council includes 2 representatives from each of Oregon’s ESDs, and we welcome everyone to apply.

We have confirmed seats available in these regions:

  • Clackamas

  • Harney

  • High Desert

  • Intermountain

  • Jefferson

  • Lake

  • Linn Benton Lincoln

  • Malheur

  • Multnomah

  • NW Regional

  • Region 18 Wallowas

  • South Coast

Position Details

  • YAC members attend monthly, virtual Zoom meetings that are typically held on Monday evenings. Meetings are usually 90-120 minutes long

  • A member’s term of service lasts for 1 academic year, and members can serve 2 terms

  • We are thrilled to offer members $25 per hour as compensation for their time.

The Work

As a member of this incoming class of youth leaders, YAC members will:

  • Set Council Goals and Measure Success - Develop clear goals and success criteria for youth advisory council’s role as an advisory body.

  • Review Existing Programs- Review current state programs and make recommendations for improvements that advance youth accountability from education leaders.

  • Assist with Surveys - Assist in reviewing and improving surveys to ensure accurate representation of youth perspectives.

  • Connect with other Youth Leaders - Engage with youth leaders, particularly from diverse communities, and explore leadership networks to identify best practices.

  • Improve Reporting Processes for Bias Incidents - Evaluate and recommend improvements for how youth report bias incidents or hate crimes, ensuring better support for affected youth.

  • Engage in member led subcommittee work such as AI safety in schools, extracurricular and club engagement, anti-discrimination practices, and elevating rural youth experiences
