JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: PART TIME-Triage Telephone Nurse

LOCATION: REMOTE

DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the DPCS-Scheduling Director of Operations and does not supervise or manage clinical staff.

GENERAL SUMMARY: A contract position responsible for providing triage (sorting/prioritizing patients) telephone service to ensure prompt identification of patients with high risk conditions.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Talks directly to patients on the phone and then directs them to further care if needed.
  • Performs short evaluation of the patient situation to estimate severity of illness and /or injury.
  • Determines urgency of seeing the patient based on brief assessment of patient’s condition and history.
  • Acknowledging if patient is with high-risk chief complaints and needs PRN visit or higher level of care.
  • Coordinates/Interfaces with clinical staff, MD’s, IV pharmacy and Labs.
  • Knowledgeable Medical EMR Systems.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: RN degree; On-the-job training in triage.

Minimum of five years of experience as RN; one to two years of telephone triage experience, preferably in medical practice setting.

    PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of telephone-based clinical assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical practice telephone triage protocols.
  • Knowledge of appropriate home health information for patients, especially wound care, IV care.
  • Provide proof of current RN licensing.
  • Provide current first aid and CPR cards.
    ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patients.
  • Ability to elicit information needed to make brief evaluation.
  • Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed.
  • Medical EMR System

PHYSICAL/MENTAL STANDARDS: Mostly sedentary position. Hand/arm injury possible from repetitive movements. Stress generated of high volume of calls and emergencies.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Computer hardware/software for access to patient history and medical information database. Interfaces with company answering telephone service.
