King County is seeking a Paralegal I for the Victim Assistance Unit, specifically for current employees of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The role involves managing restitution discovery, preparing claims, and serving as a resource for victims and attorneys regarding restitution matters.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for a high volume of restitution discovery management
- Involves acute analytical review of criminal cases to determine restitution claims
- Preparation of those claims for presentation to the court and attendance at restitution hearings
- Serves as a restitution resource for the office and as the VAU point for general victim, attorney, insurance inquiries and correspondence
- Provides status and system information, advises victims of their rights and options, offers referrals where appropriate, and provides support to the prosecutors and to VAU reception staff
Skills
- Knowledge of legal office practices and procedures particularly in the Criminal Division
- Excellent Customer Service skills, which includes; skill in responding in a positive, mature and helpful manner to various individuals who have been harmed and in dealing sensitively and effectively with individuals having diverse backgrounds and concerns
- Skill to maintain, within broad guidelines, an overview of complex processes involving many steps, and of each task from beginning to end; to obtain all information needed for completion and to set priorities
- Ability to prepare, organize and manage voluminous restitution legal documents for filing with the Clerk's Office
- Skill in viewing a task from beginning to end and obtaining all information needed so that necessary time deadlines are met
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with a strong attention to detail
- Ability to perform assigned job duties with frequent interruptions
- Skill in maintaining confidentiality and discretion involving highly critical matters
- Ability to problem-solve and identify needed procedural and policy changes
- Excellent math, computer and organizational skills are required
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strict attention to detail, are required
- Advance skill in using computers and the ability to become proficient in the use of database programs such as PbK, Info-Net, SAW, JABS, KC Script (with training), Word, Excel, and Adobe Pro
- Skill to work independently and follow through on given assignments as well as be a part of a team and interact appropriately with others
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with co-workers, management, attorneys, court personnel, law enforcement, community partners and the general public
- Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance
- Ability to learn from directions, observations, and mistakes, and apply procedures using good judgment; ability and willingness to accept supervision, coaching and feedback
- Actively participate in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussion
- Provide support for the Race, Equity and Social Justice policy and principles, work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement
