Forensic Materials Engineer - Insurance Industry, HYBRID (Concord, ON)

SCM Insurance Services is seeking a Forensic Materials Engineer to join their Collision Reconstruction Team. The successful candidate will conduct root cause material failure investigations to support insurance and legal proceedings across various industries, developing problem-solving skills and technical knowledge in materials science and mechanical engineering.


Responsibilities

  • Lead projects from start to finish, ensuring that timelines stay on track
  • Communicating directly with clients to confirm project scope, budget, scheduling, and findings
  • Assess, analyze and report on the origin and cause of material failures
  • Interview witnesses and service personnel, and obtain background information and documentation on a loss
  • Attend sites and document evidence with photographs, measurements, and detailed notes
  • Conduct materials characterization and analysis, including non-destructive and destructive laboratory examinations of evidence
  • Provide verbal and written reports to clients

Skills

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Materials/Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering License or the ability to become licensed in the province of Ontario is a requirement
  • Must have a valid G license, access to a vehicle, and the ability to work in remote areas, as well as in a range of temperatures and weather conditions
  • In-depth knowledge of materials science (metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites), microscopy (optical, digital, and scanning electron), fractography, metallography, microstructure analysis, mechanical property testing, and other materials characterization, with hands-on materials laboratory experience preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude for component disassembly and/or machine shop experience is an asset
  • Experience conducting technical literature reviews
  • Proficiency in digital photography to document sites and evidence
  • Ability to produce neat and legible handwritten notes, diagrams and sketches
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office (MS Word, Outlook & Excel)
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills, and a good command of the English language
  • Well-organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities to meet deadlines, and a demonstrated track record of taking projects to successful completion
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to discuss project budgets with clients and maintain continuous communications throughout a project
  • A positive, self-driven attitude with a willingness to learn and collaborate with colleagues
  • Graduate level degree in Materials Engineering or Materials Science is an asset
  • Mechanical aptitude for component disassembly and/or machine shop experience is an asset
