The Role: Business Data Scientist – Impact Measurement

We are seeking a talented Business Data Scientist to join our Impact Measurement team within the YouTube Business Strategy and Operations group. As a Business Data Scientist at arenaflex, you will serve as a critical bridge between data and decision-making. Your work will directly influence how YouTube – one of arenaflex's most impactful products – makes strategic decisions that affect billions of users worldwide. You will translate ambiguous business questions into rigorous analytical frameworks, design research studies to answer those questions, and communicate findings to executive stakeholders with clarity and transparency about uncertainty and assumptions.
What You'll Do
The Impact Measurement group within YouTube's Business Strategy and Operations team is responsible for driving data-informed decision-making across the organization. This team combines deep strategic, operational, and problem-solving capabilities with practical experience in executing complex analytical initiatives. As a Business Data Scientist on this team, you will:
- Design and Lead Research Studies: Develop and execute rigorous research projects with the clear goal of answering high-impact business questions. You will formulate hypotheses, select appropriate methodological approaches, and ensure analytical integrity throughout the research lifecycle.
- Extract and Analyze Data: Pull data from large datasets using SQL and apply statistical analysis techniques using tools such as R, SAS, Stata, or MATLAB. You will clean, transform, and validate data to ensure accuracy and reliability in your analyses.
- Communicate Insights Effectively: Present actionable insights and recommendations to executives, business leaders, and cross-functional partners. You will translate complex statistical findings into clear, compelling narratives that drive strategic decisions.
- Conduct Peer Review: Serve as a peer-reviewer and representative for causal research designed by other teams, ensuring methodological rigor and analytical best practices across the organization.
- Stay Current with Advancements: Remain updated with advances in the causal inference literature and develop new techniques when appropriate. You will bring cutting-edge methodologies to bear on business challenges.
- Translate Business Questions: Work with stakeholders to transform vague business questions into concrete analytical frameworks, defining success metrics and research approaches that align with organizational objectives.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
We're looking for candidates who bring a strong foundation in quantitative methods and a passion for applying data science to real-world business challenges:
- Educational Background: A Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Data Science, Machine Learning, or equivalent practical experience. Your academic training should have provided you with a solid foundation in statistical methodology and analytical techniques.
- Technical Proficiency: Experience with articulating business and product questions, and pulling data from datasets using SQL. You should be comfortable writing complex queries to extract the data you need for analysis.
- Statistical Tools Expertise: Experience using statistical tools and programming languages such as R, SAS, Stata, or MATLAB for data analysis. You should be proficient in applying statistical methods to answer business questions.
- Analytical Experience: Internship or professional experience with data evaluation, demonstrating your ability to translate data into meaningful insights.
- Communication Skills: The ability to communicate findings to non-technical audiences while being transparent about uncertainty and the assumptions used in your analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following experiences would strengthen your application and help you excel in this role:
- Experience with Bayesian hierarchical models, Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), Bayesian Causal Forest (BCF), Gaussian Processes, and Synthetic Control techniques for causal inference.
- Experience designing and analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including sample size determination, randomization procedures, and statistical analysis plans.
- Experience designing and analyzing causal research using observational data, including difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity, and instrumental variables approaches.
- Advanced experience with statistical data analysis including linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic models, and sampling techniques.
- Experience with machine learning approaches for prediction and inference tasks.
- Background in media, technology, or entertainment industry analytics.

As a Business Data Scientist on the Impact Measurement team, you will have a direct influence on how YouTube allocates resources, develops products, and serves its vast user community. Your analytical work will help decision-makers understand the true impact of various initiatives and investments, ensuring that resources are directed toward the most value-creating opportunities.
Compensation and Benefits
At arenaflex, we believe in rewarding exceptional talent with competitive compensation. The US base salary range for this full-time role is $124,000 – $182,000 plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by position, level, and location. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries across all US locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
