Position Overview
The Barge Chief Engineer is the senior technical authority on board, responsible for the continuous operation, maintenance, and repair of all engineering systems. This role requires a "hands-on" leader who can manage complex mechanical overhauls while mentoring junior crew members in a high-stakes offshore environment.

 

Primary Duties / Responsibilities:

·         System Mastery: Lead the maintenance and repair of main engines, electrical generators, air compressors, and A.C. lighting/alarm systems.

·         Specialized Machinery: Oversee heavy-duty equipment unique to barge operations, including cranes, winches, gearboxes, and ballast/potable water systems.

·         Climate Control: Maintain and troubleshoot all onboard HVAC and refrigeration units.

·         Administrative Oversight: Maintain meticulous daily engine logs and preventative maintenance records; manage inventory and parts procurement.

·         Leadership & Safety: Mentor junior personnel for succession; lead safety meetings and ensure strict adherence to JSA guidelines.

·         Offshore Logistics: Operate comfortably in remote environments, including travel via helicopter or crew boat and personnel sling transfers.

 

Qualifications & Experience

·         Communication: Strong ability to give and receive complex technical instructions in a fast-paced environment.

·         Compliance: Valid Driver’s License/Photo ID and TWIC card are required.

·         Preferred Certifications: Rigger, Fall Protection, Water Survival (HUET), Fire Fighting (Incipient), and Safe Gulf.

 

Physical Requirements

·         Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor in all weather conditions.

·         Full mobility for climbing, lifting, and balancing around heavy machinery.

·         Capacity to wear all required PPE (hard hats, PFDs, respirators) for extended shifts.

 

Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of marine engineering experience (offshore preferred).
