Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Director of Data Engineering, the senior-level SQL Developer is a hybrid role that sits at the intersection of SQL development and database administration, combining hands-on application and reporting SQL with critical production database ownership. The person in this role will be a foundational contributor to our data infrastructure — writing and maintaining the SQL that powers both our reporting and our primary application and acting as the guardrail between rapid development cycles and a stable, performant production environment. This senior-level position will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to the broader engineering team.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Design, write, optimize, and maintain complex TSQL stored procedures, functions, views, and triggers supporting production applications, APIs, and reporting workloads
• Review and partner with application engineers on SQL changes prior to production deployment, identifying performance and scalability risks early
• Analyze query execution plans, implement indexing strategies, and tune queries to ensure consistent performance as data volumes grow
• Support schema versioning and controlled database deployments across development, preproduction, and production environments
• Translate business, product, and reporting requirements into wellstructured, maintainable, and performant SQL solutions
• Diagnose and remediate production database issues impacting performance, availability, or stability
• Manage and validate structural database changes, including schema, indexing, and configuration updates, using proper staging and rollback procedures
• Support database security, access controls, patching, backup validation, archival, and disaster recovery practices
• Participate in supporting production database incidents and operational issues
• Serve as a senior technical resource for SQL Server development and database performance best practices
• Provide guidance to engineers on efficient SQL usage, schema design, and data access patterns
• Contribute to database standards, patterns, and technical decisionmaking across engineering and data teams
• Participate in code, design, and architecture reviews with a focus on performance, scalability, reliability, and compliance
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams to improve database deployment, monitoring, and operational efficiency
• Create and maintain technical documentation including data dictionaries, schema diagrams, stored procedure documentation, and process flows
• Document data lineage, transformation logic, and business rules across application and reporting layers
• Ensure database and data handling practices are audit ready and compliant with HITRUST and HIPAA requirements
• Perform other duties, as assigned, to ensure effective operation of the department and the Company
• Live by and promote Verisma Core Values
Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field required
• 6+ years of experience in senior level database administration and SQL development roles supporting mission critical systems
• Strong background in database administration, with demonstrated ownership of production SQL Server environments, including reliability, performance, security, and operational readiness
• Proven experience diagnosing, remediating, and preventing performance degradation in SQL Server production environments
• Expertlevel proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server (2016+), including deep hands-on experience with TSQL; SQL Server 2019 strongly preferred
• Strong understanding of database operational best practices, including indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, backup and restore strategies, disaster recovery, and access controls
• Demonstrated experience managing and validating structural database changes, including schema evolution, indexing changes, and configuration updates using controlled deployment and rollback processes
• Extensive experience designing, implementing, and maintaining stored procedures, functions, and database objects at production scale
• Solid understanding of relational database design principles, normalization, and schema management
• Experience maintaining and modifying SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cubes, including troubleshooting, performance tuning, and structural changes
• Experience using version control (Git) and CI/CD practices for database schema and deployment workflows
• Working knowledge of Azure data services such as Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, and Blob Storage
• Experience with schema migration and deployment tools such as Redgate Flyway or equivalent
• Exposure to ETL/ELT processes and data pipeline tooling (e.g., ADF, Synapse, Databricks, dbt, or SSIS)
• Experience supporting on call rotations and responding to production database incidents
• Knowledge of HIPAA, HITRUST, or other regulated data handling requirements
• Background working in healthcare technology or other regulated industries strongly preferred
• Microsoft certification such as Azure Database Administrator Associate or equivalent preferred
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and developers on SQL performance, database usage patterns, and operational best practices
• Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills, with the ability to translate technical findings into business relevant terms
