Our genetic counselors depend on the various tasks of our GCAs within the realm of clinical operations. They answer questions for our patients and may facilitate intake, payment, family history completion, and various behind-the-scenes support for both patients and providers. Their efforts to improve our workflows aid our expansion of accessible genetic counseling services.
Genetic Counseling Assistant Interns (GCAs) must be Undergraduate Sophomores or further in their education. International applicants are NOT eligible for this position.
This year's program will only have a single position open for a GCA. This GCA therefore must be reliably able to complete assigned weekly tasks and will commit to performing data entry, patient intake, and creation of family history pedigrees based on patient health information. The GCA will commit to shadowing appointments with a Genetic Counselor an average of one to five times per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
GENOMICS EDUCATION PROJECTS: The GCA role incorporates many aspects of genomics education through additional projects producing informational materials, presentations, documentation templates, workflow improvements, social media initiatives, and more, based on their additional availability beyond their clinical role. The GCA Intern will select a project at the beginning of their internship to complete before the end of their internship (May 2027). This project will have support from staff leadership and may evolve throughout the internship.
AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Available to volunteer 10-20 hours a week divided as follows:
Vacation time and time off for academic, personal, or professional reasons will be accommodated as much as possible. Advance notice is always appreciated and preferred! Certain schedule changes that will long-term impact the requirements of the role (like a month long vacation or inability to commit to specific internship times) may create the need for a role change or early termination of your program participation.
An example schedule is found below. Note that the schedule of the GCA will be created based on their academic, professional, and personal schedules to ensure mutual benefit and no detriment to other commitments.
GCA Sample Schedule:
Come GC Graduate Application Season, interns are welcome to participate in resume/CV, and personal statement workshops and receive assistance and feedback from Clover Genetics staff on improving their application and identifying resources and support.
